Frequently Asked Questions about Ohio Core Administration

Listed below are some of the most frequently asked questions about Ohio Core Administration, as required by section 3313.603 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC). Also provided are links to frequently asked questions by curriculum. Other questions may be added in the future.

Will districts receive Ohio CORE grant funds again this year?
While SB 311, the Ohio Core legislation, did authorize funding for up to eight years, no funding beyond the first year was appropriated by the Ohio General Assembly. That source of revenue for school districts is not available during this biennium.

Will school districts receive sample policies and forms for the academic Opt-Out provision, for example, a written statement of consent or a sample of a career plan?
The Opt-Out provision of ORC §3313.603 does not become effective until a student has completed two years of high school. The earliest that could occur is spring 2012. The Ohio Department of Education plans to work with the Ohio School Boards Association and other education organizations to develop common language to provide guidance on this issue. After vetting both internally and in the field, that guidance will become available for schools.

What is the status of readiness tests? Is credit for competency or "testing out" of course requirements going to become an option?
Performance assessments are currently under development. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) will begin piloting performance assessments during the 2008-09 school year. More information should be available in August 2008. A recommendation should be presented to the State Board of Education in early 2009 for adoption by the March 31, 2009, statutory deadline for approval of a state plan.
