College and Career Ready Standards and Model Curriculum Development

In June 2010, the State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics, the results of a multi-state effort. The board also adopted more rigorous versions of Ohio's academic content standards in science and social studies. All fours sets of standards will underpin teaching in Ohio classrooms by 2014-2015, but schools are encouraged to begin using the standards now to prepare students for corresponding  assessments that begin in 2014-2015.

The Ohio Department of Education has worked with teams of teachers across Ohio to develop a model curriculum of teaching strategies and resources aligned to the College and Career Ready Standards. The State Board of Education adopted the model curriculum in March 2011.

Revision Process History
The standards revision process began with an international benchmarking research study, focused on the content standards of top-performing nations, to identify best practices from around the world. Other sources for the revision include expert reviews of the current standards, college- and career-readiness standards, and local stakeholder input.
