Hosting Parent Academies

Purpose header graphic

By hosting Ohio Department of Education-sponsored Parent Academy programs, we are reaching out to let parents know we want them to be involved in their children’s learning and to work with their schools as a team. Research shows that families who are involved in their children’s schools have more successful students. Families will learn about and implement specific strategies they can use at home to help their children be more successful at school.

Description header graphic

We are hosting a Parent Academy on Conditions for Learning in each of our kindergarten through eighth-grade buildings in hopes of reaching more families. Anyone is welcome to attend any session, even if it takes place somewhere other than at a child’s home school.

Trained facilitators from our local Educational Service Center (ESC) are leading the workshops. We are providing snacks for participants and activities for students who come with their parents.

We received positive verbal feedback from attendees at our first academy.

Parent participation
We tackled this problem by holding the academies in different buildings on different nights. If parents were unable to attend the academy scheduled for their building, they could consider attending one of the other sessions.

We sought and received verbal feedback from our first Parent Academy. This led us to move up the dates of two of the academies so they can be held earlier than originally planned. We will continue with the Parent Academy sessions on Conditions for Learning during this year. Next year’s academies will feature another topic.

Funding and resources header graphic

This activity was planned and implemented by our Title I parent coordinator in partnership with ODE and our local ESC. Teachers volunteered to develop activities for students to participate in during the academies. Snacks were provided through our cafeteria coordinator using Title 1 funds.
