WeEXCEL Academies for Teachers (formerly WOMAT and WOSAT)

The WeEXCEL Academies for Teachers project engaged 117 mathematics and 81 science teachers of grades three through 10 in rich mathematical or science activities designed to deepen their content knowledge and make connections to mathematics and science in the real world. The project enriched the Ohio Mathematics Academy Program (OMAP) and Ohio Science Institute (OSCI) materials with activities that addressed the conceptual and pedagogical topics identified in the Ohio Academic Content Standards, K-12 Mathematics and K-12 Science.

Participating teachers were involved in activities designed to improve their teaching practices by strengthening their content knowledge and developing their abilities to revise instructional and assessment practices based on student achievement data. The project engaged teachers in a one-week session during the summer and will continue to strengthen their content knowledge and facilitate discussion of pedagogy during several one-day sessions throughout the school year to embed their learning in classroom practice.

West Ohio Science Academies for Teachers (WOSAT)
The West Ohio Science Academies for Teachers project offered seven one-week summer professional development programs for grades three through 10 teachers of science. Each WOSAT academy focused on deepening teacher content knowledge and pedagogical understanding of the Ohio Academic Content Standards, K-12 Science for the appropriate grade level for participants. Seventy-one teachers were involved in activities designed to improve their teaching practices by strengthening their content knowledge and developing their abilities to revise instructional and assessment practices based on student achievement data. Teacher participants will meet throughout the school year with science university faculty members to build on the foundation provided by the summer academy and to embed their learning in classroom practice.
