Location: The Ohio State University, Hagerty Hall, 1775 College Road, Columbus, Ohio

The Ohio Department of Education’s (ODE) Office of Curriculum and Instruction, The Ohio State University’s K-12 Chinese Flagship Program, the Ohio Association of Teachers of Chinese (OATC) and the Miami University Confucius Institute are pleased to announce the third annual joint symposium for district and school decisionmakers interested in developing, expanding or sustaining Mandarin Chinese language programs.

The one-day conference will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, in Hagerty Hall, 1775 College Road, on the OSU campus. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The event will begin with a short, general session for all participants. Afterward, participants will attend one of three breakout sessions:

  • Track A will address the needs of schools seeking information and options for initiating Chinese programs.
  • Track B will address the needs of schools with established Chinese programs.
  • Track C will provide in-service opportunities for classroom teachers of Chinese.

The symposium will conclude with a networking session to allow schools and districts to share what they are doing.

An optional job fair will be held from 2–3 p.m. to give districts that will be seeking to hire Chinese teachers in the near future an opportunity to meet Ohio-trained and licensed educators who are currently available for employment.

Superintendents, principals, curriculum coordinators, foreign language coordinators and Chinese classroom teachers are all encouraged to attend this event to learn more about Chinese language programming in Ohio.

There is no cost to attend the symposium. Lunch and parking are the responsibility of participants. A map and list of nearby restaurants will be included in each participant’s conference packet.

Pre-register using ODE’s online STARS registration system. Conference attendance will be limited to the first 225 registrants. Registration will open on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, and close on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. Access STARS by clicking here.
