The Subcommittee on Education in the Global Economy (EDGE)
The State Board of Education recognizes that graduating students who are well-prepared for the 21st century is key to maintaining global competitiveness for the U.S. and Ohio. In 2007, the State Board created the Subcommittee for Education in the Global Economy to examine the question: "Looking ahead to 2020, what will be the most important skills, knowledge and behaviors for students to acquire to provide Ohio with competitive advantages in the global economy?"
The Subcommittee was charged with:
To engage industry, businesses of all sizes, entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations, government, institutions of post-secondary education, and the general public to identify the knowledge and skills required by Ohio students to be better prepared and more productive in the highly competitive environment of the new global economy from the present to 2020.
The subcommittee shall provide the State Board of Education with policy recommendations and an implementation plan addressing standards, assessment and student achievement designed to improve the economic competitiveness of Ohio students.
The Subcommittee engaged a research study to identify the skills, knowledge and behaviors that businesses believe students will need to be successful in the global economy. From this research, the Subcommittee developed a Top Ten list of the responses to this question.
The Subcommittee invited public feedback of the Top Ten list through an online survey and a series of regional stakeholder discussions in September 2008. As a result of this feedback, the Subcommittee developed strategies for Education in the Global Economy:
- Modernizing the content and delivery of standards and assessments;
- Creating capacity for personalized learning; and
- Engaging the business community.
