Engaging Families and the Community in School Levy Passage

This practice was designed to help Winton Woods City Schools continue to cultivate a world-class education for children by helping parents recognize their role in passing a proposed local school levy. Our goal was to educate parents about the levy vote’s impact on the continuing success of academic programs, extracurricular activities, bus transportation, sports and a host of educational activities.

Our community PTA sponsored a Meet the Judge night at which a local judge spoke on the importance of voting and being knowledgeable about issues affecting the community. The PTA supplied child care for the meeting. A parent designed a stakeholder's matrix for the community to review. Also our parent advisory council sponsored a Meet the School Board Candidate night at which parents heard ideas from individuals who were seeking seats on the district board of education.
Our school administration used the "one call" approach to inform families without Internet access about the importance of helping to pass the school levy and the critical nature of keeping families informed of school events and activities. During this time our district demonstrated its transparency and accountability by making fiscal information available on its Web site.

The success of this effort was apparent with the passage of the school levy by a 59 percent vote.

Communication with the community

The levy vote itself was our means of determining that our efforts had been effective. The day following the election, district administrators released news that important outcomes would be implemented. Community members and parents sent letters to local newspapers thanking the community for passing the school levy.

Our partners included our community PTA, parents, parent advisory council, community leaders and administration. In-kind donations provided the resources for these events.
