The Academic Content Standards Revision Process

Content specialists in the office of Curriculum and Instruction are currently reviewing and proposing changes to Ohio’s Academic Content Standards. The standards revision process began with an international benchmarking research study, focused on the content standards of top performing nations, to identify best practices from around the world. Other sources for the revision will include expert reviews of the current standards, college- and career-readiness standards, and local stakeholder input.

Several themes are emerging as ODE prepares for the revision. Potential changes to the standards include:

  • Organizing the standards by topic and theme;
  • Clarifying the progression of topics across grades;
  • Reducing the content to be more manageable and to promote greater depth of learning;
  • Supporting the standards with model curricula that include clarifications for instruction, instructional resources and learning expectations; and
  • Infusing 21st-century skills.

The standards revision and model curricula development will occur in two phases:

Phase One Standards

  • Mathematics
  • English Language Arts
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Phase Two Standards

  • World Languages
  • Fine Arts
  • Business Education
  • Computer Literacy
  • Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship

Stakeholder input began in June with meetings of education organizations and discussion groups. The invitation to participate in the June 30 discussion group meeting for teachers and curriculum directors received an enormous response with more than 1,600 applications for 200 positions. Fifty participants per content area were selected to represent various grade levels, types of districts, regions and demographics of the state. Click on the PDF below for more information about stakeholder involvement.

Stakeholder input was solicited via an online survey posted on this Web page from July through mid-August. Click on the link below to see the results of this survey.

Below are the PowerPoint presentations (in PDF format) with talking points that were presented at the June 30 meeting. ODE encourages review by all interested Ohioans.

Additional opportunities to provide input will be offered at other stages of the standards revision process. Please bookmark this page and check back for updates.
