The quality of any field or organization depends on the quality of its leaders. Real leadership in early childhood education and care is not necessarily synonymous with title or job function. There are many individuals, irrespective of their titles, that demonstrate leadership in the field. At the core of leadership is a deep knowledge of the field in which one works, a willingness to take risks, a scope of vision and thinking that looks beyond individual programs and services, and a capacity for working collaboratively to meet the needs of all concerned with the education and care of young children.
To respond to the accelerating growth and constantly changing demands in early childhood education and care, the field must look at leadership in multiple ways. Individuals characterized by the qualities and functions within pedagogical administrative, advocacy, community and conceptual frames of leadership must be cultivated.
The mission of the Irene Bandy-Hedden Early Learning & School Readiness Leadership Award is to honor and promote individuals supporting the well-being of children birth to eight years of age within multiple frames that demonstrate leadership, creativity and innovation, accountability, and excellence in the field of early childhood education and care.
The Ohio Department of Education established the awards program in 1994, naming it for Irene Bandy-Hedden, a former assistant superintendent of public instruction who helped the state make strides in early childhood education practice. Bandy-Hedden now is a consultant, author and speaker who has held positions with state and national educational organizations.
For an educator, administrator, parent, community member or faculty member to be considered for one of the five awards, the nominee must exhibit qualities within one of the following categories:
- Community Leader
- Pedagogical Leader
- Administrative Leader
- Advocacy Leader
- Conceptual Leader
All nominees must: • Support the well-being of children from birth to eight years of age; • Demonstrate a commitment to promote quality early childhood education and care; • Demonstrate the ability to listen and build supportive relationships with their peers, colleagues, students, children and/or parents; • Demonstrate an ongoing effort to give back to the community.
