Moving Standards into Instruction

A four-part professional learning series during 2012-2013

Teachers throughout Ohio are looking at how Ohio’s New Learning Standards will change classroom teaching in the 2013-2014 school year. To support this shift in instruction, the Ohio Department of Education is offering a series of four trainings for curriculum and instruction supervisors, professional development facilitators and other district leaders on how to implement the shifts at the district and classroom levels.

Participants will learn about the common instructional shifts expected for all subject areas and types of learners, as well as shifts within specific subjects. They also will:

  • Take away modules they can use to facilitate implementation in their districts;
  • Examine examples of model classroom units based on the instructional shifts; and
  • Join fellow educators in designing their own high-quality instruction.

Training Events

Part One – Training  Sept. 24–Oct. 5 at seven regional locations. This three-hour session for professional development, curriculum and teacher leaders focuses on the specific instructional shifts for each of the New Learning Standards subjects. The trainer will present instructional-shift modules participants can use to facilitate district-level instructional shifts.

Training Resources:

The links below include resources that can be used by district leaders and staff development specialists to help transition school faculty members to Ohio’s New Learning Standards.

Part Two – Follow up  Nov. 26 through Dec. 5. This second three-hour training will bring Part One participants back together to discuss the work their districts are doing based on the instructional shift modules.

Part Three – Training  February through May 2013. Designed for subject-area teachers and district-level specialists such as gifted, SWD and ELL, this session will have participants practicing model classroom units based on the instructional shifts.

Part Four – Summer Academy June-July 2013. This multi-day event will give educators the opportunity to evaluate and design high-quality instruction. Participants will receive a certificate.
