Intervention Specialist or Early Childhood Intervention Specialist Supplemental Teaching License

The supplemental teaching license allows educators holding a currently valid Ohio standard teaching certificate or license to teach in a supplemental area, at the request of an employing Ohio school district, while they are in the process of obtaining standard licensure for that area.

Below are the requirements for obtaining and renewing an Intervention Specialist or Early Childhood Intervention Specialist Supplemental Teaching License.

Initial Requirements for the Intervention Specialist or Early Childhood Intervention Specialist Supplemental Teaching License:

  • A currently valid standard Ohio teaching certificate or license;
  • 6 semester hours of intervention specialist coursework. This requirement may be waived at the request of the employing superintendent if he/she determines that the teacher's experience and training sufficiently enables him/her to meet the needs of the assigned students. (Waiver of coursework is available in Application Data section of the application.)

The employing school district shall assign a teacher with teaching experience and licensure in the area in which the supplemental teaching license is requested, to serve as a mentor to the supplemental teaching license holder.

Requirements for First Renewal:

  • A currently valid standard Ohio teaching certificate or license;
  • 6 semester hours of coursework in a program leading to licensure in the area in which the supplemental teaching license is held (completed after the issue date of the initial supplemental license);
  • Successful completion of the Praxis II subject assessment for the licensure area. ODE's educator licensure testing document includes assessment/test requirements by Ohio licensure area. Scroll to the Intervention Specialist section of the chart.

Requirements for Second Renewal:

  • A currently valid standard Ohio teaching certificate or license;
  • An additional 6 semester hours of coursework in a program leading to licensure in the area in which the supplemental teaching license is held (completed after the issue date of the license to be renewed).
